Freedom: Too Much to Handle, for Some
- Freedom includes permitting people to make poor choices and allowing them to suffer the consequences;
Freedom includes the ability to get it wrong - to make poor choices. And then comes consequence!
Many people would have the word 'judgement' substituted for 'consequence' but I prefer 'consequence' because it infers the answer lies within man's reach - which I think is the case. That a man who makes bad choices in life should be shielded from suffering the consequences of that choice - at the expense of others - is to me absurd.
Taking responsibility means you are prepared to respond, given a problem - theoretical or actual, and respond in a manner which avoids or resolves the problem. This is very practical approach to conflict avoidance and resolution, and if you take away someone's responsibility for his actions, you render that person unable to handle himself in the world around him. You render him weak and defenseless.
- The idea of breaking the law carries with it the notion of punishment as a consequence;
The law serves the purpose of protecting the innocent by seperating out that element in society which does not place itself within the reach of reason and in so doing begins to enfringe on the rights of innocent fellow human beings. Nothing earth-shattering about that - we afford people the choice between life and death in this life - except when that death(which could be slow) intrudes into the territory of the rights of the innocent. Now that is freedom - a lot of it! The law doesn't address the causes of 'sin' or unethical conduct. As a tool to restore man to a place of spiritual safety the law is weak - nevertheless it serves temporarily as a tool to stave off widespread decay until we understand the causes of the downward spiral;
- The law is increasingly being used for subversive purposes;
The state has always tended to attract those who do not have man's best interests at heart. Prior to the French Revolution, an alliance between Church and State rendered the state with a tool with which it could excercise social control. The decline of religion has been in proportion to the growth and development of psychiatry. This alliance between government and psychiatry now has most facets of our society under its control. Psychiatry has with growing momentum embedded itself over the last 300 years (especially in the last 70 years) under the cloak of a scientific and medical garb into such areas as religion, education, politics and law. One might well ask how much else there is left to infiltrate.
